Brandon Sanderson is a successful fantasy writer.
- I’ve been reading his book Mistborn these past few days and I really love it.
In this article, Cal Newport summarizes some points/tips from Brandon Sanderson during one of his talks, and relates those to his Deep Work book.
According to Brandon Sanderson, the following claim is much more realistic in order to pursue hard goals:
“I can do hard things. Doing hard things has intrinsic value, and they will make me a better person, even if I end up failing.”
To help structure any attempt to tackle hard things, Sanderson gives three tips:
Make better goals
“Make goals that you have control over,”
Learn how you work
- Figure out what combination of motivation, circumstances, and accountability work best for your particular personality.
Break it down
- Break large goals down into manageable pieces.
